Castle Vale, Birmingham
This scheme was the winning entry for the Europan IV Housing design competition.
The scheme includes a masterplan for the redevelopment of a 1960’s housing site on the edge of the city.
The site includes fourteen existing tower blocks which were to be remodelled and refurbished to provide better quality homes along with extensive new works at
ground level to create new private and public spaces, community facilities and additional low rise dwellings. We worked in collaboration with the Castle Vale
Housing Action Trust and the existing residents to develop the scheme to detailed proposals.
One of the key issues with the existing towers was the interior and exterior space at ground level. The scheme creates new communal sitting areas, small allotment gardens
and secure parking defined by sloping grass banks. Internally a new double height communal sitting area and shared laundry is provided.
