Courtyard Houses, Crouch End
This scheme for two unusual single storey houses designed around private courtyards was completed on site in 2012. The site was previously occupied by number of derelict garages and is dominated by large mature trees along each of its boundaries. The new houses are carefully positioned and orientated to conserve the trees and create a sense of calm and privacy for the occupants.
The rooms have been carefully grouped and positioned to follow the contours of the site, through stepping and an internal ramp. Carefully positioned courtyards allow the admission of high levels of daylight and views to the gardens. The design of each new home provides for flexible use and adaptation to the changing lifestyle of the occupants.
Each house is designed around a private and secluded courtyard. The courtyard is designed as an extension of the living spaces which is carefully integrated and connected to all of the rooms within.
A palette of high quality construction materials has been chosen to match and harmonise with the existing buildings around the site. These materials also gain character as they age enhancing the quality of the development over time.
The houses are constructed in London stock facing brickwork punctuated by the vertical black slate chimneys. The green planted roofs step to follow the contours of the side and express the living spaces below within.
The rooms have been carefully grouped and positioned to follow the contours of the site, through stepping and an internal ramp. Both houses feature an open-plan kitchen, dining, living area with study/playroom and 3 bedrooms. The living room and bedrooms on the South and West elevations have floor to ceiling glazing and open up to the terrace and private gardens, the North elevation to the mews is more closed with a row of slot windows, providing more privacy.
